In July 1959 Rootes decided launch their new 'Alpine' model at Cannes, in the south of France. In August 2009, the British Alpine owners club celibrated the 50th anniversary of the Alpine with a rally to Cannes with around fifty surviving Alpines travelling to meet there. XRW 302 successfully completed the Cannes 50th anniversary rally, covering 2,142 miles from London to Cannes in the south of France and back, between August 16th and 23rd without any mechanical problems. My co-driver crashed their car, overturning it on the way to meet me as we were about to set off, so we began the trip two days late, travelling to Grenoble in 22 hours with breaks for just fuel and coffee! The highlight of the rally was meeting with over fifty other Sunbeam Alpines, their owners and guests on the Croisette in Cannes and travelling in convoy along the sea front to Le Grand hotel to a Champagne reception and dinner. Having been let down by my co-driver on the return journey, I drove all the way back myself spreading the journey over three days, following club members Mac and Auriol in their series V Alpine.
